Hi Rick,
Many thanks for that extra info. As you have no doubt discovered research in London is not easy, and I really appreciate what you have given me. Now as to sources. The data for your direct line is all from par. registers as filmed by LDS and available on fiche. Thrapston: Ch 1813-48 #6129078, ch 1848-83 #6129079, M 1813-61 #6129083, B 1813-75 6129090 Denford: C 1813-79 # 6127242, M 1813-37 # 6127244 Islip: C 1813-64 #6127899, M 1838-1958 #6127903 Twywell: #6129143 to #6129148 incl. and checked against the B.T.s on film #1999989
Now, as to how I linked my family back to the Twywell crowd: civil reg. (I bought the certificates) & 1871, 61, & 51 census got me back to a John P.born York & his wife Elizabeth born Spaldwick Hunts.
Found marriage in transcript of Spaldwick par reg at Soc of Gen., London. No other Percivals in area.
Then through LDS ordered films of par. reg or B.T. for each of the 24 parishes in York. read 80 yrs & extracted every Percival in each. (took abt 3 yrs- this was before they were put on the IGI). There was only one John - truly! But was he mine & what were his origins? A visit to the Borthwick institute in York allowed me to see the orig. parish reg which had msch more info that the BT. birth date, father's occupation-army plus regiment no, & name of the mother's father,- John Swailes.
PRO Kew Lon: looked up army recs. - Soldiers' discharge docs - NIL pay recs- gave date of enlistment & date of absconding
Monthy returns - should give the place where the reg. was in the month of enlistment. My luck ran out as the reg marched from Peterborough to York in that month. George could have enlisted at any point on the Gt North road.
Next Step: consulted or wrote to holders of marriage indexes for the counties along the Gt North Rd, looking for marr of George Percival & Alice Swailes. Drew a blank with NTH, HUN, RUT, LIN, ERY. Have not yet checked for LEI, NTT, & rest of YKS.
>From LDS again; read all Percival Wills from abt 1680 in Archdeaconry Ct of Northampton, Consistory Ct of Peterborough, 2 Cts in YKS. - no clues.
Largely gave up, although building up an impressive collection of Percival trees (that aren't mine) in NTH, RUT, LIN, YKS, by ordering parish reg.s from LDS, hoping "something" might turn up. (did abt 7-8 yrs on this step)
The breakthrough: in NTH record office, I looked at a card index of wills for a John Swailes. Presto! A bequest to "my grandson John Percival son of George Percival and Alice, my daughter". In parish reg
of Pilton, The Swailes' parish is a bap in Nov 1796, of a John P. s/o George & Alice born Sep 1795. (ties up with the date in the York christening.)
You're probably so bored by now, but you will understand why I do not want all that effort to be lost. I won't go into detail as to how I located George, or linked him to Twywell, but I'll list other sources
I have used.Militia Lists: All men eligible for militia service between ages of 18 & 45. NTH recs on LDS # 0919266, #0919267. Because the father of Twywell George was lame I was able to track his movements away from Twywell & back again. Through these.Land Tax assessments: in NTH Rec Office- see when a householder moved to a parish.
Personal name index: cards in NRO, filmed by LDS. this identified some documents about a land transfer, which included a declaration about my g-grandfather's family, correspodence with the Spaldwick Baptist chapel. This was important in explaining my family's situation, b/c the family be this time were baptist, but lived in a village where there was no baptist chapel. The children were not baptised, therefore the vicar would not give them a "Christian" burial, not write their names in the parish burial register.
In seeking to identify more recent family members, I have used the 1881 census, 1891 for Twywell, and purchased a few birth certificates to help with maiden names of the mother. London is a bit too big to
chance this one. I've also checked through the National Probate Index 1855 - 1942, to extract death dates.
In an attempt to trace further back from the patriarch William, and also the missing brothers on my side of the family, I have searched, with no success, transcription of Hearth Tax record, Poll Tax Recs,
Poor Law index, Index of marriage licences, boxes of documents for individual parishes, all in NRO. I found 2 brothers in the index of duty paid on Apprentices held by the Soc of Gen London.
I don't dare look back to see how long this is. As you can see I have rather muddled along. I would not be prepared to put this amt of effort into any line other than my main male line. thank goodness
Dad's mother's line was easier!
All the best with your future research, and thank you for your information.

William Percival ! Comments of the Percival Trees prepared by Lesley Percival of Australia

There are 2 William & Marys having a family at the same time, Wm & Mary (nee Blackwell) marr 1 Jun 179, and Wm & Mary (nee Turner) mar 17 May 1797. The baps of children does not give maiden name of mother to distinguish them, so one has to do a bit of inspired guessing. I have not "guessed" the same way as the patron who submitted them to the IGI.. There are 3 children whom the patron has attached to the Percival- Turner marr which I have put to the Percival-Blackwell marriage. My reasons follow:
1. Moses PERCIV AL: chr 29 Jul1803
In the 1841 census, there is a widow Mary aged 70 living with Moses & . There was also a widow Mary, aged 64 living with William junior (the one who married Mary Brown), and his family.
By the 1851 census, widow Mary is still living with Moses, now aged 83 and identified as his mother. There is no sign of the other Mary.
From the parish register: Buried - 24 Aug 1851 Mary Percival aged 84. This correlates with the age of Moses' mother as given in the census. It also correlates (minus I month) with the christening of Mary Blackwell (Twy 21 Sep 1767). Since she was probably at least a few days, possibly weeks, old when she was christened, this age is a very good match, and I conclude that Moses is a son of the Percival-Blackwell marriage.
The Mary who was living with William in the 1841 census must be the "other Mary". She died 22 Jan 1844. The death was registered by William who was present at the death. The identification of William as the son of this Mary is confirmed by the will of James Perciva1 of Woodford (proved 12 Nov 1877, Registered copy vo120 p910 at Nth CRO), which refers to him as "my late nephew".
2. Mary PERCIVAL: chr 29 Jul1803
The parish bap reg says that Moses & Mary are twins '-
3. Benjamin PERCIV AL: Chr 11 Oct 1807
The case for this Benjamin also being the son of William and Mary nee Blackwell Percival is not as strong as is the case of Moses, but on balance I think it the most likely.
(a). The above Benjamin named his third son Benjamin Blackwell Percival, suggesting a connection with the Blackwell family.
(b). The eldest son of Benjamin, William Humphrey P (Humphrey is his mother's maiden name. ) married Agnes Percival of Polebrook which is some distance from Kettering where his family were living. John the s/o Wm & Mary nee Blackwell Percival lived in Polebrook, so were the Benjamin christened 1807 also the son of the Percival-Blackwell marriage then John of Polebrook would be Wi1l.iam.Humphrey P's uncle. This would be a good reason for visiting Polebrook, and so meet his wife there. (Australians do not rave the same aversion to
cousin marriage as do Americans - we see the prohibition as something peculiar to Catholics. In practice of course we usually meet someone other than a cousin! I do not know what the Canadian attitude is. In genealogy I've found a number of cousin marriages. )
(c). If both Moses and Benjamin are removed from the tree of Wm & Mary nee Turner Percival, then the boys in that latter family are named i) William and ii) James, i.e. the first after the father, and the second after the grandfather, a common practice.
I cannot be too dogmatic about this one, but I think until I get additional information I will stand my ground against the contributor to the IGI. He was christened on 6 February 1777 at Twywell, NTH, Eng. He was the son of James Percival and Elizabeth Woolaston. William Percival married Mary Turner on 17 May 1797 at Twywell, NTH, Eng.
