Walter Bitton Major difficulty - Is it BITTON or is it BITTEN.
Problem is now solved. The marriage certificate shows the name as BITTON. Also the birth records for Julia and Albert Bitton show Walter's own signature confirming the BITTON spelling! The 1891 Census shows the spelling as Bitton but the Pinecrest Cemetery Informant Card shows it as Bitten. The card is signed by George Wallace of 117 Concord St. so it is the right dead body! My guess is that Grandpa George simply spelled the name wrong for both the cemetary and the newspaper clipping. As well Grandpa George listed him on the Death Informant Card as 82 years of age at the time of death. This would have him born 1936 - 82 = 1854. The newspaper obituaries (probably supplied by Grandpa Wallace) has Walter Bitten in his 87th year and that would have him born in 1849 (1936 - 87 = 1849). Marriage certificate shows Walter as a widow when he marries Mary Ann. It also lists him as 26 in 1881. This means he was born in 1855. This age has been selected. Also shows him born in Cambridgeshire with his parents as Thomas Bitton and Grace Bentely. Grave is Section G - Row 4 - Asg#14 See source reference - Have selected BITTON as it appears in the census along with Mary Ann, Julia and Albert. Using this reference, Julia at 9 years of age in 1891 or born about 1882/83. Therefore 1918 - 1882 = 36 years of age whenJulia died. Walter was 29 in 1891 and therefore was born about 1862. Mary Ann was 27 and therefore born about 1864. Albert was 2 in 1891 so was born about 1889. 1891 Canada Census in National Archives Roll T6359 and T6360 - E3 and E4 - Wellington Ward 1-121 and 1-111 Page 97 of Roll T6360 NEED TO OBTAIN THE FOLLOWING TO CONFIRM NAMES AND DATES: - MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF JULIA TO GEORGE A. WALLACE This will show parents of Julia - DEATH CERTIFICATE OF MARY ANN BITTON This will show parents of Mary Ann According to his marriage certificate to Mary Ann Smith he was a widow - need to check marriages index prior to this marriage! According to Mom: -Originally Walter lived at the corner of Main and Echo - had a distinct British accent - saw Gary Wallace as an infant - drove a wagon for the Ottawa Public School Board -1891 Censu shows him as Salvation Army for religion -Apparently remarried to a widow named Bleakney - she had two daughters Edna and Madge. Edna married Art ____? and moved to Detroit. Madge never married, died after WWII and was a very close friend of Aunt Peggy Hamilton. - He left Mrs. Bleakney and moved into a rooming house on Albert St - died in Ottawa? According to Newspaper Clipping: - died at local hospital - Metropilitan Tabernacle - Independent Order of Foresters - Survived by son Albert and 2 sisters in England - worked for Public School Board on mechanical staff. He was born on 16 March 1856 at Burwell, Cambridgeshire, England.2,3,4 He was the son of Thomas Bitton and Grace Bentley.
