Alice Caldwell Very little on this - some reference in the archive
Apparently was very sick - died young - lived near Annie in the States and worked with her in a childrens home or something - Beech Acres Protestant Home for Orphans outside of Cincinnati.. Record of death is from a newspaper clipping that Auntie Ethel had - died of peritonitis? Grave is Section 121 - Grave #1870 - Single space Apparently Edward saw his sister driving in a buggy one day near Carlelton Place and recognized her. She was buried at Spring Grove Cincinnati Ohio. She was born on 20 November 1882 at Manchester England. She was the daughter of William Caldwell and Alice Molineux. Alice Caldwell died on 25 June 1918 at St. Mary's Hospital Cincinnati, at age 35. Ann Caldwell was christened on 22 December 1850 at Melton Mowbray, Leicester, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Charles Caldwell and Sarah Brown.
Citations Her married name was Kattine. Annie Caldwell Alma Kattine is the source for this material - she corresponded with Auntie Ethel and I spoke to her in 1992 by phone in 9 Tabaleen Lane, Milford Ohio.
Alma corresponded with Mary Wheeler in England - Mary's mother was a cousin of Annie (Caldwell) Kattine - see the letter from Mary in the Caldwell Archive. Also letter from Alma describes pictures that she sent. Edward and Annie came to Canada by schooner from England. Did not see Emma until they were adults - Alice visited Annie once but died young. Emma and Annie were not close for some reason. Came to Canada with brother and 2 sisters - adopted by J.Y. Caldwell (no relation?) Met Louis Kattine - a widower - 2 children Bernice and Alma - Annie raised them. Have a letter on file that was sent from the adoption agency in Manchester/Salford with some information about the children. It was sent to Mrs. Louis E. Kattine of Higginsport, Brown County Ohio - this was Annie Caldwell. The copy of the letter is in the Originals File. Alma says Polly Harris may have been an Aunt to Annie Caldwell - her husband was a "hod" carrier? Polly (Mary?) and Charles Harris - Poly must be a sister to William Caldwell???. They apparently died soon after coming and are buried in Spring Grove Cemetary in Cincinnati Alma says that William and Alice Caldwell died within a few days of each other - there was talk of William ending it all when his wife died because he couldn't care for the kids and therefore they were sent to Canada through an orphanage. THIS IS ALL UNCONFIRMED! Notes from copies of letters to Aunty Ethel Dale from Alma Kattine: - Annie, Emma and Edward came over on a "rolling ship" , a sailing vessel - Alice was a baby - joined Annie later - Annie was with Mrs. Zimmerman - a music teacher - beat her left a scar on her head with a broom stick and a scar on her lips from being gouged by the woman's fingernails - later went to Caldwell family (no relation) in Carp. - Later moved to Cincinnati along with Emma - apparently the siblings didn't see each other until they became adults Extensive info on Annie and Edward from Allen Caldwell (no relation) in Carp - spoke to him several years ago - didn't follow up - he died - see notes. Annie Caldwell was also known as Nellie. She was born on 24 April 1876 at Salford Lancaster England.1 She was the daughter of William Caldwell and Alice Molineux. Annie Caldwell married Louis Edward Kattine on 28 April 1914 at Wesley Chapel.2

Edward John Caldwell On 24 January 1887 he was admitted to the Children's aid Society in Salford with his sisters Annie and Emma. This particular home was the Rosen Hallas Girls' Home. My guess is that they did not want to seperate Edward from his sisters as he was very young (9 yrs)!.
The Admission Documents (see archive) list all 3 children as being born in Manchester/Salford, being in fair condition, vaccinated, of usual height, ruddy complexion and having no experience with the police or reformatory. An aunt, Mrs. Robinson of 18 Church St. and Grandmother Elizabeth Crosier, 15 Bignall St. Ordsal Lane, Salford were mentioned. There is no mention of Alice, the youngest. She probably stayed in the care of the aunt or grandmother and came to the USA later. The Home lists all 3 "at own request" wanting to go to Canada.
